Words Your Church Should Stop Using (Part 3 of 3)

This is the third of a three-part series of posts. Click to see part one or part two.

As a leadership team at our church, we recently reevaluated the use of certain words that we had always used without thinking about it. These words weren't bad, they just did not communicate what we intended. In this third part of this series, we will examine one more word:

Important New XLM Teaching Series Starts This Week

Over the past few weeks I have heard story after story of our XLM students talking about being bullied, ostracized, criticized and ridiculed for their faith at school. Sometimes it's connected to positions they hold that are offensive, other times it's just because they are Christians.

We often don't consider the impact of our words, but they are so powerful. James discusses this issue in James 3 where he describes the power of the tongue and how important it is to keep it in check. This is especially important in a church setting where we use common words and don't consider what they communicate, implicitly or explicitly. Sometimes what we intend to communicate and what we actually say are two different things.

How My Dad's Life Changed 50 Years Ago Today

It was 50 years ago today that something happened in my dad's life that would change him forever. In October of 1963 my dad went to the Oklahoma vs. Texas football game with his dad in Dallas, TX. They saw the game, Oklahoma lost, and they decided to drive home that evening.

The next day was a Sunday and my dad went to church with his brother, Carl. This was not their usual practice as they were not church attenders, but for some reason they went that day. The pastor talked about John 3 where Jesus is having a conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee. Jesus tells Nicodemus that he must be born again. The pastor preached that this was something we all need to do. That everyone must experience the new birth that comes from knowing Jesus.

Words communicate meaning. But we often don't consider the impact our words have. This is especially the case in a church setting where we may use standard words all the time and don't think about what they communicate, implicitly or explicitly.
