Partnering With Parents - XLM Brunch

I love partnering with parents in student ministry! We are in this thing together to make disciples of the next generation. God has charged parents with training their children and has commissioned the church with making disciples. When we partner together amazing things can happen in the lives of our students!

If you are a parent of an XLM student please make every effort to attend the brunch tomorrow at 11:00 in the XLM Room. We will share some great material and resources with you to facilitate conversations with your teen about dating and relationships.

Imagine what God will do as we tackle this complicated issue together. Imagine if we are sending the same messages to our young people about these tough topics. I can't wait to see what God does in the lives of our students! Here is a preview of what is to come tomorrow at the brunch!

Think Part 1 - Trinity

This week at XLM we kicked our "Think" series with a discussion on the trinity.  A dear friend of mine, Johnny Armstrong, is joining us for this series to dialogue with me about the complexities of these topics.

He serves as an elder at CBC and teaches in our college ministry.  He contagiously passionate about the study of God's Word.  I benefit so much from our discussions on theology, and I think our students will too.

In this first week we looked at how to make sense of the trinity; the idea that we serve one God who exist eternally in three persons.  You can view the video of the first week here.

Brunch With XLM Parents About Dating Series

I am so excited to be hosting a brunch for xlm parents or other adults who are interested in the well-being and spiritual development of teens and children.  It is this Sunday, April 1st, 11:00-12:15 at Centreville Baptist Church (XLM Room).

We had such a great response from the students to our 'It's Complicated" series on dating and relationships! God moved in big ways to give the students a new way of looking at the topics of relationships, marriage, and purity.  Each week we took up questions from the students receiving 125 total.  These questions are so insightful and so telling of where our students are that I want to share them with our parents!  I also want to share with them exactly what we taught and put that material in their hands so they can talk with their teen/child further.

Spring Retreat With Brandon Hembree

The XLM Spring Retreat was such a refreshing time for all involved. We laughed, we served, and we grew in our faith. A good friend of mine, Brandon Hembree gave some powerful messages on putting Christ first in our lives and submitting to his control.

Saturday morning he taught on the importance of a daily time with God and then led us through how to have a devotion. It was a powerful time of reflection and meeting with God.
You can check out the retreat messages below and connect with Brandon on his twitter page or his blog.

It's Not Safe To Think

To know God at a deep level, we have to know his word, and to know his word we have to THINK. Critical thinking is so important to understanding the Bible, how it fits together, what its central message is and how it applies to our lives.

This Sunday we begin a new xlm teaching series called, "Think." I want to challenge our students to think about some of the toughest, most disputed topics in the Bible. We're going to ask questions like:

Does baptism save me?
Is Jesus the only way to heaven?
Does God choose me or do I choose him?
Can I lose my salvation?
How do I make sense of the trinity?

Entire denominations have been formed (or splintered) over disagreements on these issues.  As a youth pastor it is SO tempting
